With a population of more than 300,000 residents, Markham has one of the best doctor-to-patient ratios in the country. There are more than 83,000 doctors in Canada, and a significant number of them work in the city. Estimates show that there are more than 250 doctors per 100,000 people in Markham, meaning that well over 750 doctors are on call here. There are even more nurses staffing the approximately 20 hospitals in the city. Even though these numbers are impressive, not all hospitals are created equal. There are healthcare facilities known for their care, expertise, and amenities. Here are some of the best hospitals in the city.
Markham Stouffville Hospital
Specializing in acute care, Markham Stouffville Hospital on Ninth Line near Highway 7 is one of the most accessible facilities in the city. It is also the largest hospital with slightly more than 300 beds and about 500 doctors. There’s a helipad at the hospital for transporting patients on the roof of the emergency wing. Markham Stouffville is the base hospital and resource center for paramedics in the Greater Toronto area. It rose to prominence by being one of the first facilities to offer medical care for severe acute respiratory syndrome. Also, being affiliated with the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine contributed to the facilities expansion, and today it offers services like cardiorespiratory treatment, mental health programs, ambulatory care, and surgery.
First Markham Medical Centre
First Markham Medical Centre is where you go for regular check-ups or follow-ups. The facility location inside First Markham Place makes for a convenient commute for residents. At the same time, it makes the facility one of the busiest medical treatment centers in the city. At times, you’ll wait upwards of an hour before a doctor sees you, even though you had an appointment. That’s not a bad thing if you think about it. Doctors at the hospital are so efficient and friendly that patients make a beeline for the hospital every day. While you wait for your appointment call, a short walk through the nearby mall should calm your nerves.
