Hospitals in Oshawa ON

Being one of the most advanced and most populated cities in the eastern edge of the famous Greater Toronto Area, Oshawa is home to several hospitals, walk-in clinics, and several other health care facilities including Lakeridge Health Oshawa-Durham’s largest public healthcare facilities and one of the largest hospitals in Ontario.

Lakeridge Health Oshawa

Established as Oshawa General, Lakeridge Health Oshawa is a state-of-the-art hospital located at 1 Hospital Ct that offers 24-hour medical care services to residents of Oshawa and the neighboring Whitby town.

The hospital first became operational in late 1910 in what was then a simple two-story structure. Ten years after its inception, the first major extensions to the facility were made which led to the introduction of an independent maternity wing and a surgical wing. The so-called “G” Wing was not opened until 1970 when the hospital was celebrating60 years of services to the residents of near Oshawa Ontario.

In 1998 Oshawa General Hospital (just before its name was changed), along with several other hospitals in the nearby towns and cities were put under the management of the newly formed Lakeridge Health Corporation. Immediately, the Corporation renamed all the hospitals under its management and expanded Lakeridge Health Oshawa’s jurisdiction or area of service to include both Oshawa and Whitby and in turn, lowered Whitby General hospital from its initial status of a full-service medical care center to a simple public walk-in clinic.

Today, Lakeridge Health Oshawa remains the largest and most advanced hospital in the entire Durham Region, having a bed capacity of 363. The hospital responds to over 70,000 emergency cases every year and handles over 27,000 surgeries per year according to the data collected in 2006 and 2007. The hospital underwent further expansion in the years leading up to the 2007 opening of the North wing. Plans for further expansion are still underway in an attempt to double the hospital’s bed capacity.

Lakeridge Health Whitby

This is a Whitby based hospital which was closed after Lakeridge Health Corporation took over the administrative powers over the local hospitals in Durham. The clinic was later reopened to serve as a specialty clinic in the region including the neighboring city of Oshawa. The facility currently offers services like dialysis, dementia care, geriatrics, day hospital, and palliative care. There are plans to open a new hospital to take over some of the former and current responsibilities of Lakeridge Health Whitby which termed as needing major renovations and upgrades.
