Most people especially children do not enjoy grocery shopping but this all changes when it comes to farmers’ markets which are different from the regular grocery stores in more than one way. The farmers’ market is one of the few places where the kids will gladly go to buy produce and other items. We visit the farmers’ market at least twice a month in the summertime and continue to do so till they are packed away for the winter. Farmers markets in Whitby, ON and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are open between late May and the end of October and are a fun adventure for the kids especially during weekends. Whitby Farmer’s Market
Though not one of the bigwig farmer’s markets in the GTA, Whitby Farmer’s Market located at 400 Dundas Street just outside Whitby’s public library is the largest open-air farmers’ market in Whitby, ON. With over two dozen participating farmers, you can find a variety of fruits, vegetables, homemade preserves, honey, maple syrup, baked goods, eggs, meats, and flowers/potted plants. Almost every vendor has samples of tasty seasonal vegetables and fruits samples for the buyers to try and this is one of the things that kids really enjoy and its a great way to introduce them to new flavors. While the kids may be picky eaters at home but with all the tasty mouth-watering delicacies at the farmers’ market, they will try almost everything edible! Whitby Farmer’s Market which opens on Wednesdays from 8 am to 3 pm has grown significantly since it was moved to its current location in 2017 with the number of vendors and buyers increasing every week.
The stallholders come from all over the town and in some cases, from the neighboring towns and cities which means you will have a great day browsing the stalls and sampling the organic produce available. The vendors are always very friendly and will offer plenty of new and interesting recipes for you to try with the fresh locally sourced produce you buy from them. Many of these recipes and methods have been passed down through the generations, so you can learn some amazing traditional recipes. Apart from the produce and other farm products, the Whitby Farmer’s Market features vendors selling baked goods, and snack for lunch and you can bring your yoga mat for an exciting free yoga session with professional trainers.
