Famous people from Newmarket, ON

Town of Newmarket ON is a very lovely town that boasts an urban setting and a rural village-like feeling. The Town is a designated bedroom community of the neighboring Toronto city, Canada’s largest and most prolific urban center. Apart from having a lot of fun features and amenities like parks, lakes and recreational centers, Newmarket takes pride in being home to some of the county’s most prominent people. Below is a list of some popular people who at some point in their lives have called this beautiful town their home:

Gabrielle Daleman

Daleman is a 21-year-old Canadian-born figure skater who at her tender age is considered one of the best in the figure skating business.  Although she was born in Toronto, Daleman and her brother Zack who is also a professional figure skater were raised in the neighboring town of Newmarket where their father worked as a teacher in Pickering College, the same school they attended. She started skating as a young kid and even won several awards while under the Aurora Skating Club.

She kicked-off her professional career in 2012 and became a silver medalist in that year’s ISU Grand Prix. This tuned out to be the start of a very promising career. In 2014 at just 16, she was part of the Olympic team that represented the country in the Sochi Olympics. Since then, she has won several major honors including a gold medal, a World bronze medal, a Four Continental silver medal, two Canadian national championships, and a CS Autumn Classic championship. She currently lives in Newmarket but trains in Toronto.

Belinda Stronach

Next on the list is Stronach, a Canadian born philanthropist cum businesswoman who previously served as an MP. She is the daughter of famous businessman Frank Stronach who founded Magna International, a giant vehicle parts manufacturer where Belinda Stronach briefly worked as a CEO after leaving politics. Belinda was born in Newmarket but currently lives in Toronto and works as the CEO of The Stronach Group.

Elvis Stojko

Last on the list is Stojko, a renowned former Canadian male figure skater who has won gold medals in three World Championships, two silver medals in the same competition and a record seven Canadian championships. Stojko was born, raised and lived in Richmond Hill for a large part of his adult life before moving to Toronto after the retirement where he currently lives with his wife of on a 140-acre property.
